MP eager to hear feedback on proposed federal electoral map changes

Sarnia-Lambton's Member of Parliament has already heard some concerns in regards to proposed changes to the federal electoral map.

The Federal Electoral Boundary Commission, an independent panel, recently released a list of proposed changes across the province.

Locally, it's suggested that Walpole Island First Nation, Dresden, and Wallaceburg join a new riding called Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong.

"That would take us from 105,000 population to 127,000," said MP Marilyn Gladu.

Some concerns have already been brought to Gladu's attention, including one from the chief of Walpole Island.

"His initial response is that they have a lot of initiatives that they share with Kettle and Stoney Point and being divided might be an issue there," said Gladu.

Under the proposal, Kettle Point and Lambton Shores would be in the Lambton-Kent-Middlesex riding.

"I've encouraged him to seek input from the band and to join on with the public hearings and the written submission."

Gladu is hosting an online town hall on August 30 at 6 p.m. A zoom link can be obtained by emailing marilyn.gladu.a1@parl.gc.ca.

The commission will also host a virtual public hearing for southwestern Ontario on September 27 at 6:30 p.m. Those who want to participate in the meeting must fill out an online form by September 25.
