Literacy Lambton says donations collected from this past May's Race to Erase fundraiser will go a long way toward supporting local youth.
Four teams (Read it and Weep, The 789's, Team Sloth, and The Magic Erasers) raised a total of $3,806 for the organization which will allow them to fully fund one of six "Train Your Brain" program sites this fall.
Executive Director Tracy Pound said it's a free eight-week evening program, aimed at improving math and reading skills for those in grades three and four.
"We focus a lot on things like failure being a necessary part of success," said Pound. "We talk about self-regulation. When you get really nervous about taking a test, things like breathing skills that help you relax and positive self-affirmation. Things like 'I am a really smart person' and 'this is going to be hard but I can do this'."
Pound said community funding is critical in helping Literacy Lambton thrive.
"All of our mission-related activities are completely through the generosity of private donors, corporate funders, service club grants that we apply for, and any kind of fundraising that we do on our own efforts. This is just great to be able to offer Train Your Brain."
Pound said those interested can visit www.literacylambton.org, with online registration set to open in mid-September.
The sessions are scheduled to start the first week of October and continue through the end of November.
Race to Erase participants raised a total of $27,954 for various charities across Sarnia-Lambton.
Since its inception in 2006, over $700,000 has been raised in Sarnia, London and Cambridge.
