Unattended cooking causes Petrolia kitchen fire

Damage is estimated at $100,000 following a kitchen fire in Petrolia Wednesday night.

Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Chief Jay Arns said his volunteer firefighters were called to a home on Henderson Drive at around 6 p.m.

"The crews had a quick knock down of the fire," said Arns. "We had two people on scene assessed for smoke inhalation and later transported [to hospital]."

Arns said cooking was the cause.

"All of the damage was contained within the kitchen, except smoke and a little bit of water damage throughout the remainder of the house."

Chief Arns said the lone occupant, and their pet, were outside when firefighters arrived.

He said unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires.

"If you're going to be cooking on a stove top, you should be attending to it at all times so you can keep an eye if things get out of control."
