Council to consider changes to Sarnia Transit

Changes are proposed to Sarnia Transit in the new year.

City staff is recommending increased service to Bright's Grove, increased weekend service hours and a north-end evening fixed route to begin on January 2, 2023.

Mayor Mike Bradley said he likes the direction staff is recommending.

"So this would just improve the routes that exist and add additional service, and at the same time facilitate what is the driver of the increased service which is the students at Lambton College," said Bradley. "

Bradley said before the pandemic, ridership was at an all time high in the city, with over 1.7 million passengers recorded in 2019.

"Every municipal transit service was devastated by COVID with ridership over the last number of years, so it's a slow recovery."

City staff is also suggesting public engagement on a more significant proposed change to the standard route times. Most current routes operate on a 30 minute trip from a main terminal back to the terminal. Staff are considering an adjustment to forty minutes.

Monday's council meeting begins at 1 p.m.
