Sarnia council briefs

Councillor Adam Kilner has been appointed as the alternate member to Lambton County Council for the 2022-2026 term.

Kilner can attend regular meetings in the event that a county councillor or the mayor is unable to attend.

Councillor Bill Dennis had been appointed during the previous council term.

Anne Marie Gillis and George Vandenberg have been appointed to the Bright's Grove Library Committee.

The committee will have seven voting members, determined by city council. Two from city council, two county library staff and three members of the public. Non-voting members will also be included in the committee.

The library expansion was added to the 10-year capital plan in May.

The full expansion project has been estimated to cost between $5 million and $8 million dollars.

It will see a community hub created at the Faethorne House in Wildwood Park.

A community room and expanded library are planned, and Gallery in the Grove would move onto the main floor of the existing building.

An updated lease agreement has been accepted with the Lambton Kent District School Board [LKDSB] for five acres of land adjacent to Mike Weir Park.

The Sarnia Cricket Club has been told that broader community access will be required of the existing cricket field there.

The city has leased the property since 1986. The new lease is largely based on this historical agreement. The city will lease the land for $1 per year, over the next 10-years.

The city will be responsible for its upkeep and in exchange, LKDSB can book the property for its students at no cost.

The installation of a little free library has been approved for Cathcart Park.

The estimated $200 cost, to install concrete around the post supporting the library, will be reallocated from the 2022 special activities operating budget.

The library will be run as a pilot in 2023 with the Rotary Club of Sarnia-Lambton After-Hours.

The goal of the program is to increase access to reading materials to support literacy.

The little free libraries promote free “take a book, share a book” exchanges and have already been installed at Germain Park, Twin Lakes Park, Wiltshire Park, Centennial Park, and Marcin Park.

The one at Centennial Park is the only one that has been vandalized so far. It will be moved from its original location, along the waterfront by the Suncor Agora, to the Flag Court area, once sinkhole repairs are completed this year.

Sarnia council has approved an increase of the backwater valve grant to $1,600.

The increase will be retroactive to August 4, 2022, when hundreds of residents, particularly in the Coronation Park area, were impacted by flooding.

-------------------------------------------------------

Increased Sarnia Transit service to Bright's Grove was also approved.

Starting January 2, 2023, there will be more weekend service hours and a fixed evening route in the north-end.
