Driver accused of fleeing crash scene in Sarnia

A 19-year-old suspended driver who allegedly failed to obey a stop sign, causing a two-vehicle collision, is facing multiple charges.

Sarnia police said a crash was reported at the intersection of Indian Road and Sycamore Drive on Thursday at around 10:30 a.m.

The driver of one of the vehicles allegedly fled the scene.

Shortly after the collision, officers found a vehicle travelling eastbound on Sycamore Drive with extensive damage and deployed airbags. The vehicle was stopped and police suspected the driver of being under "the influence of something."

It's alleged the driver became belligerent and resisted arrest. This behavior reportedly continued and police said the accused "attempted to strike an officer" while at the police station.

As a result, the young man was charged with refusing to comply with a breath demand, assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, disobeying a stop sign (failing to stop), driving while under suspension, and failing to remain at the scene.

Police said fortunately, the driver of the other vehicle did not sustain serious injuries.
