United Way campaign enters final stretch trailing last year

With just four weeks left to go in its annual fundraising campaign, the Sarnia-Lambton United Way is still far from its goal.

Executive Director Dave Brown said so far they've raised $950,000 or 57 per cent of the $1.65 million needs target.

He said the campaign continues to trail behind last year's pace.

"We are starting to close the gap a little bit, it is still a huge gap though considering we've got just three weeks to go," said Brown. "But, there's a lot of employee campaigns we're still waiting on including Cabot, CF Industries and Shell. Cabot Canada we do know are over last year's levels so far, so we're really excited about getting those numbers."

He said they're concerned the campaign might fall short, but remain optimistic.

"Right now we're not thinking about what happens if, we're just making sure that everybody is asked and that everybody that has given in past years has the opportunity to give again right now."

Brown said to date, about 2,000 people have contributed to the campaign, and the give-at-the-till fundraiser at the LCBO in October raised $27,000 for the initiative.

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton funds 17 local agencies providing over 31 programs and services.
