Deadline for Sarnia lighting competition extended

The deadline to enter Sarnia's residential lighting competition has been extended to Tuesday night.

There have only been a handful entries so far, and organizers are looking for more beautifully decorated homes to feature.

Celebration of Lights spokesman Dean Holtz said they've noticed a drop in entries from last year, and hopes more people will join in on the fun.

"Normally we have around 30 entries and, as of when our original deadline was, we only had about 10 entries," said Holtz. "I'm not sure why that is but we'd like to open it up to more. Certainly, there are a lot of homes that are decorated and many that are exceptionally decorated. We'd love to see them enter into the competition."

Holtz said judging will take place sometime this week.

Ideally, they'd like to see homes with at least 1,000 lights on display.

"We just want it to be well-lit and well-decorated, with the emphasis on lights as opposed to some of the other decorations that people use," he said. "The blow up decorations are fun, but we are called the Celebration of Lights and not the 'Celebration of Blow Up Decorations', so we'd prefer to see lights."

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, and there's also a childrens' choice category this year.

The Harvey McMichael Award is also being handed out for "people's choice". Prizes are courtesy of Bluewater Power.

Those interested can sign up at www.celebrationoflights.com/lighting-competition/ until 11:59 p.m.

There's also a map of homes available to view.
