Sarnia police offering holiday safety tips

The Sarnia Police Service is offering safety tips for residents to avoid being a victim of theft this holiday season.

Cst. John Sottosanti said stores are extra busy with shoppers.

Thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles and those with goods in plain view.

"Don't leave items visible for others to see," said Sottosanti. "If you do, lock the door. Obviously, we're going to advise that you hide those items. That way, it doesn't entice people to want to break into your vehicle."

Sottosanti said if you're going to be away for the holidays, tell your neighbours.

"Make sure you have lights that come on and off, be it your Christmas lights or your interior lights, to ensure that the area outside of your home is well-lit and it allows people to believe that someone is home."

He said to make sure to properly discard things like TV boxes, by cutting them up and flipping them around to hide what was in the box.

It's also recommended you avoid posting photos of presents or telling people you'll be away over social media.
