Anonymous $50K donation to enhance planned park upgrades

The City of Sarnia is hoping to enhance planned park upgrades in 2023, thanks to a generous contribution from an anonymous donor.

Someone has pitched in $50,000, which will be added to the proposed $300,000 budget for playground improvements.

Communications Manager Steve Henschel said it's important to maintain an active community, and the funds will help with that.

"Playgrounds are kind of a core recreational asset," said Henschel. "They serve individuals of any background and they're great spaces for kids to remain active, connect with peers and learn and grow.

The city is currently preparing to replace playground equipment at Cardiff Park, Lansdowne Park, Agincourt Park, and Retlaw Park in the year ahead.

Henschel said while the exact use of the donation is still being determined, the support will allow for greater options in the selection of equipment, or possibly the selection of an additional park for playground replacement in 2023.

"This is an extension of generosity that means a lot to our staff," he said. "It's encouraging to see people get behind our work like this. And, beyond that, it's great for our community. It means we can invest more money for playgrounds in the year ahead which benefits the children around the community."

Sarnia council will consider the budget, including the planned park upgrades, on January 10, 2023.
