Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has discontinued its investigation into a drug overdose following the arrest of a Sarnia man this past summer.
A 33-year-old was arrested on the morning of August 27 for a Highway Traffic Act infraction while on a bicycle.
Following a search, officers seized "a quantity of various drugs" such as fentanyl and cocaine.
After being taken to police headquarters, he appeared unwell and was taken to hospital, read the SIU report.
He was treated for a drug overdose and released days later.
"The custody footage made clear that the man did not consume any illicit substances in cells – they would have had to be ingested prior to his arrest," read the SIU report. "The footage further indicated that the man was regularly checked by police personnel while in his cell, and that medical assistance was arranged promptly upon the first signs of distress."
The file has since been closed.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials.
