The City of Sarnia is hoping to hear from residents as it develops its first Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP).
The plan, in support with Urban Forest Innovations Inc., will be compiled based on public input, a review of Sarnia's current tree canopy, and targets for urban forest management.
Forestry and Horticulture Supervisor Cory King said the consultant plans to have their portion of the project completed by November.
"Ultimately we want to establish guiding principles and policies regarding the management and sustainability of our urban forest," said King. "We can help ensure the community will enjoy the benefits of its trees through proper horticulture techniques and management practices. [The UFMP] will also state what is needed to manage the urban forest and describe activities and services required to execute these responsibilities."
King said every tree within the municipal boundary constitutes as an urban forest.
"The total tree canopy coverage will consist of all properties, whether it be industrial, board of education, private... every tree within our boundry," he said.
King said benefits associated with having a strong urban canopy include increased biodiversity, beautification, and resilience to changing weather patterns.
While all trees will be considered in regards to canopy coverage, the city said UFMP's goals and outcomes will largely relate to trees located on city property.
However, enhance tree protection on public and private lands may be encouraged through the plan.
Development of the draft UFMP will include in-person workshops, public information centres, and a survey.
Residents can complete the survey online until 12 p.m. on March 24. Paper copies of the survey are available on the third floor of City Hall.
