After years of planning, a renovation to accommodate an expanded library space at the Clearwater Community Centre is set to begin at the end of the month.

Work is expected to start during the week of March 27 and last until September.

Council approved an additional $150,000 in capital funding to advance the renos Monday.

The county now hopes to relocate the Mall Road Library into the space by the end of 2023.

City staff have been directed to negotiate a five-year mooring and storage licence agreement with the new owner of the Duc D'Orleans

The Duc has been a fixture along Sarnia's waterfront for over 40 years.

Its previous owner Ken Bracewell, and his wife Sheri, sold the operation and retired last September.

Sarnia council has directed the heritage committee to review the city’s heritage property registry.

The committee will look at which properties should be considered for designation under Ontario’s Heritage Act. The current registry lists over 250 properties that are protected from demolition and major alterations.

While the designated properties will continue to have protection from demolition under the Heritage Act, listed properties will lose the protection unless designated by council within two-years through the prescribed designation process under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

The change, under Bill 23 -- the More Homes Built Faster Act -- came into effect January 23.

The province said it was to reduce red tape and remove barriers that were considered to be slowing down housing construction and other priority projects while continuing to conserve heritage properties that matter most to local communities.

City staff will continue to review the impacts of Bill 23 and where necessary bring forward any amendments to the Official Plan to align with the legislation.

Council has accepted a $2.25 million tender for phase two of Plank Road reconstruction.

As part of the work, new watermains and wider paved shoulders will be added in a section of McGregor Sideroad to Gladwish Drive.

Van Bree Drainage and Bulldozing Limited was awarded the job.

Clarke Construction has been awarded the Vidal and Brock Street reconstruction project.

The $2.9 million job is part of the ongoing combined sewer separation program.

Phase one will see a new dedicated sanitary sewer, the installation of new storm and sanitary services, and new road and sidewalks on Vidal from Talfourd to Devine.

Phase two includes replacement of the existing combined sewer with separate sanitary and storm sewers and services, replacement of the existing undersized cast iron watermain, and new road and sidewalks on Brock, from Wellington to Talfourd.

----------------------------------------

Sarnia City Council has directed staff to complete an in-house review of the George Street and Brock Street intersection with peer review support, to mitigate collision risk.

Staff would then identify potential solutions and engage consultant support on a design solution for the intersection that could potentially be scaled through the corridor.

-----------------------------------------

A $2.1 million contract has been awarded to put a mini roundabout at the intersection of Cathcart Boulevard and Indian Road.

Cope Construction and Contracting Inc. submitted the lowest tender for the job.

Construction is planned to start in June.
