Planned maintenance is underway at Suncor's Sarnia refinery.
Suncor Spokesperson Leithan Slade said pre-event work took place over the past two weeks.
He said the scheduled turnaround is expected to take seven weeks total to complete.
"Certainly appreciate the understanding and patience of the community as we undergo to ensure the refinery can continue to operate safely and reliably," said Slade.
Slade said increased flaring and noise is possible during shutdown and start up activities.
Suncor will be conducting perimeter monitoring as well during this process.
"These planned maintenance activities, also known as turnarounds, is something commonly done at operations like refineries, and in some cases this does require bringing certain units offline in order to complete that inspection and maintenance work."
Hundreds of contractors will be on site while work is completed.
In response to community concerns over increased traffic during turnaround, the company will be using a radar sign on River Road to promote awareness among motorists of their speed.
"Certainly we do require an increased number of workers during the planned maintenance activity, and that number can fluctuate and will fluctuate during the course of this activity," said Slade.
Updates, if needed, will be shared via the My Community Notification Network.
