The City of Sarnia is encouraging residents to be eco-friendly through a revamped environmental awards program.
Instead of awarding environmental stewards during an in-person ceremony once per year, the Go-Green Spotlight Environmental Awards program will recognize leaders year-round.
"As we come out of a hiatus due to COVID, we're moving to every other month, we're going to recognize one new recipient," said Communications Manager Steve Henschel.
Nominations can be submitted throughout the year and will be reviewed by the city's Environmental Advisory Committee.
"If you're going to submit somebody's name or an organization's name, maybe wait 12 months before re-submitting it. Just because they don't get the award the next month, doesn't mean they won't get it two months after that," he said.
Henschel said individuals, groups, and businesses could be recognized for a variety of reasons.
"It's really a full gambit of environmental initiatives so it could be starting up a compost program or recycling initiatives, sustainability efforts, people who go out of their way to educate others on environmental initiatives," he said. "There are specific award categories and we'll be recognizing those based on what nominations we get."
Award categories and nomination details can be found on the city's website.
The first Go-Green Spotlight recipient will be announced on Earth Day, on Saturday, April 22.
