Striking federal workers picket in Sarnia

Striking federal workers in Sarnia-Lambton were back on the picket line Thursday.

Around 120 members of Canada's largest public-service union marched around Sarnia's Government of Canada Building on Christina Street for a second straight day.

More than 155,000 workers with the Public Service Alliance of Canada began job action Wednesday in search of wage increases and job security.

Local Strike Captain and Transport Canada employee Lisa Farrenkopf said members also want fair remote work policies.

"Our members feel that the remote work is working for them," said Farrenkopf. "Employees are productive, work is getting done, services are being provided to the public -- it's working for both of us."

The union is asking for a 13.5 per cent raise over three years. The Treasury Board and the CRA have both offered the union a nine per cent raise over three years.

More than 250 picket lines went up across the country Wednesday morning. Farrenkopf said spirits are high.

"We're here to support our bargaining team set the table negotiating our contract, which has been out since 2021," she said. "It's only day two and the weather is beautiful today, so we haven't had issues, which is fantastic."

Farrenkopf said union members will continue to picket during the duration of the strike.
