Local museums host events for PA Day

Children who are home from school on Friday, April 28 have the option of visiting local museums for both informative and physical events.

The Oil Museum of Canada in Oil Springs will host a pollinator-themed drop-in style event from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Attendees can learn about local pollinators and the role they play in Ontario’s ecosystem. Naturalist and Horticulturalist Larry Cornelis will give a presentation at 11 a.m., followed by crafts and self-guided tours.

“Pollinators play a very specific role in our ecosystem. Without pollination, many flowers and crops would not be able to grow seeds or fruit. Here in Ontario, we have several pollinator species, including bees, birds, and butterflies,” said Educational Program Coordinator Christina Sydorko. “This event is to help kids and families understand the role these species play and ways we can protect them.”

Each child will receive a special wild bergamot plant to take home, while supplies last.

Meanwhile, the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend is hosting "Spring Stretch Kids Yoga."

Linda Weir of Expedition Inner Wisdom will hold four 30-minute yoga sessions for school-aged children at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Yoga mats will be provided and no prior experience is necessary.

“Yoga is a great form of exercise, and we are excited to host sessions for children. This is an opportunity for kids to try a new physical activity and have some fun,” said Educational Program Coordinator Colleen Inglis. “We are also encouraging kids to reflect on nature and the relationship between themselves and other living beings.”

Regular museum admission rates for both events will apply. The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, $3 for children, $15 for families, and children three and under are free.
