Petrolia names 'green' 2023 grant recipients

The Town of Petrolia has announced the recipients of the 2023 Green Leader program, held in partnership with Waste Management.

About $15,000 is made available through the program each year as a way of supporting initiatives that highlight environmental and community goals.

Intake for this round of grant funding opened in 2022. Applications are due each year on March 30.

This year's successful applicants included Queen Elizabeth II School, Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club, Petrolia & Area Kiwanis Club, and St. Philip Catholic School.

The grant program awarded $5,000 to Queen Elizabeth II School for a composting initiative, which will include an outdoor school garden, two to three outdoor composters, and composting buckets in each classroom. The project also includes an indoor Hydroponic Grow Tower.

The Kiwanis Club received $4,000 to expand its preschool gardening project, which started in 2021. The summer programs provide the necessary materials and tools to create hands-on learning opportunities about gardening and composting.

The Optimist Club received $3,000 to install a soft surface under the small playground equipment at Kerr Park, using recycled rubber material.

Lastly, St. Philip Catholic School was given $3,000 to plant two welcoming gardens at the front of the school using plants that are native to southwestern Ontario.

Last year's funding recipients included Hillcrest Public School, the Rotary Club of Petrolia, the Petrolia Heritage Advisory Committee, and IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter.
