Sarnia labour groups mark National Day of Mourning

Friday is the National Day of Mourning and ceremonies are being held across the country, including in Sarnia.

The local event is taking place at 6 p.m. at the Clifford Hansen Fire Station on East Street.

Sarnia and District Labour Council President Nick Dochstader said there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the workers' memorial.

"We want to fight for the living and mourn for the dead," said Dochstader. "We want to make sure people know that there are folks in this community that have lost people or are suffering from a workplace injury or illness. This is the day to recognize that and for people to come together as a support structure with other members of the community."

Dochstader said the ceremony will also feature some speakers telling their stories, and dancers from Aamjiwnaang.

He said they hope to once again hold the ceremonies at the Missing Worker Memorial at Centennial Park in the future.

The area has been prone to flooding, and they're working with the city and other partners to rectify the problem.

"That has spurred a larger conversation about what we're going to do moving forward," he said. "For the time being, we are grateful to the firefighters for giving us a venue which we have used in the past. In the future, we hope that the current site of the worker memorial can be brought back to the former glory that it was."

Representatives will also be on hand from the Workers' Health and Safety Centre, Victims of Chemical Valley, and the Occupational Health Clinics For Ontario Workers.
