Spring Show and Sale supports local youth mentor program

Money raised from this year's Spring Show and Sale will help children waiting for a mentor match with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton.

Executive Director Kaylen Burgess said funds raised from the one day sale will go towards recruiting volunteers for the mentor one-to-one program, which currently has over 100 children on the waitlist ranging between five and 14-years-old.

"It is an alarming number of kids on the waiting list right now," said Burgess. "A couple of years ago we had to close the waiting list off and we are in talks of doing that again, just until we can get some of these kids matched. So, we need volunteers through the doors, we need people who are willing to give a couple of hours each week to mentor these youth in Sarnia and all across Lambton County as well. So, we're doing a huge drive over the next couple of months to get volunteers through the door to mentor these kids."

She said those interested in becoming a mentor can reach out to the agency in person or online at www.sarnia.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca

"If they want to just come in and have a coffee and we can chat about what it is that we do, they're welcome to stop in the office," she said. "We're located at the corner of Indian Road and Wellington Street. They can message us on social media or even just give us a call. We'd love to just chat.

The Spring Show and Sale is on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Alexander Mackenzie High School.

Burgess said admission is $7, children 12 and under are free.

"Think of it as a donation coming in the door and that goes directly back  to the agency to support youth mentoring."

She said there are over 100 vendors lined up for the third annual event Saturday.

"So we have a lot of the same vendors as the fall but they come back with different products," she said. "A lot of it is focused more on Christmas and winter in the fall, this one is definitely geared towards spring and summer. We have candles, we've got macramé, a lot of new clothing lines that people have started here locally and woodworking."
