Canada Day to be celebrated in Point Edward

The Village of Point Edward is celebrating Canada Day over one week early.

A celebration to mark the country's 156th birthday is planned at Waterfront Park, under the Blue Water Bridges, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 22.

A variety of activities are planned, including; a carnival maze, inflatables and games.

There will be face painting, temporary tattoos and balloon creations.

A photo booth will be set up and there will be live music, while participants enjoy free pizza and cupcakes.

In addition to the activities, the contributions from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming's Starlight Casino Point Edward will be recognized and this year's recipients of the Maynard and Rene Walker Scholarship will be announced.

Mary Ellen Walker established the scholarship in memory of her parents in 2017. Maynard Walker, a former village fire chief, was born in Point Edward in 1926 and lived on the same street there until he died in 2014. Rene moved to the village from Sarnia when she married Maynard in 1949 and was active at the village's Presbyterian church until she died in 2017.

Applicants are judged on a number of things, including their contributions to the Village of Point Edward, high school grades, financial need and the student’s financial contribution to their own education.
