Sarnia Fire and Rescue is urging us to be safe and obey the law when setting off recreational fireworks this Canada Day weekend.
Under the City of Sarnia's fireworks bylaw, they can only be set off on Canada Day, the day prior, and the day following.
Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said the fireworks bylaw was updated last year to include new rules and enforcement.
"Some of the things that didn't change include the fact that you're not allowed to set off fireworks on public property," said Bus. "You can only set off recreational-style fireworks on private property and you need to make sure everything stays on your property, like all of the garbage that goes along with it. If you buy fireworks locally, you have to make sure that they issue you the regulations with that."
Bus said you must be at least 18-years-old to purchase or detonate fireworks, adding fines can be in the $300 range for non compliance.
Bus said they haven't responded to any fireworks-related fires in past years but said police have received some noise complaints.
He said it's better to go to the fireworks show at Centennial Park on Saturday night instead of lighting off your own.
Those get underway at 10 p.m. along the waterfront.
