A speed limit reduction is recommended on Lakeshore Road, to accommodate a proposed pedestrian crossing at Mike Weir Park.
Sarnia council is being asked to make the request to the County of Lambton at Monday's meeting.
Mayor Mike Bradley said Howard Watson Nature Trail (HWNT) users have already created an informal connection point between the trail and park, despite two existing adjacent connections.
"The reality is people are using it and I think it's a good move to do this, to have that crosswalk there," said Bradley. "It does take education so people understand it's there. People have to be cautious and this project can actually, with existing funds in place, be completed by the end of this year."
Currently, the speed limit on Lakeshore Road transitions from 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) to 70 km/h, approximately 100 metres east of the Cull Drain at Jamieson Lane.
It would need to be lowered to 60 km/h between Wilmers and Moore Lanes to meet provincial requirements.
"My only concern is... speed limits do not dictate how fast people travel. That's been the issue on that stretch," Bradley said.
If approved, the crossing would be similar to those that cross Michigan Avenue near Blackwell Road, Wellington Street at the HWNT, Finch Drive along the Lambton College Trail, and Christina Street at Canatara Park.
Installation of the crossing is estimated at $50,000.
Grant funding obtained through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program would be used to cover a portion of the cost.
