Truck sinks in St.Clair River, teen driver charged

A 16-year-old driver has been charged with Careless Driving and Class G1 licence holder unaccompanied by the qualified driver – both charges under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

Sarnia police received reports that a truck carrying two individuals was sinking in the St. Clair River Friday evening, in the area of St. Clair Parkway near Marlborough Lane.

Both teenagers made it to shore safely by breaking a window to escape, after being unable to open any doors while sinking.

Sarnia Fire Rescue and the Point Edward Fire Department assisted a local tow company, and the truck was removed from the river.

Sarnia police said the G1 driver was issued a 30-day licence suspension.

No injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sarnia Police Cst. Rich Scott at 519-344-8861 extension 6217 or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
