Local charities to get a boost through 24-hour hockey game

Hockey fans are in for a treat this week, as a special 24 charity hockey game is set to take place.

The initiative is being put on by Hashtag Charitable and will see 48 teams take to the ice at Progressive Auto Sales Arena, all while raising funds for 12 local agencies.

Spokesperson Kaley Holder said the games begin at 8 a.m. Friday, September 8 and run through until 8 a.m. Saturday.

She said it's an all-ages event. Teams will be assigned a one-hour ice time, and play another team based on age and skill level.

"We're especially excited for Friday night at The Hive because we are going to see some great local hockey on the ice," said Holder. "We have the Sarnia Legionnaires, the Sarnia Sting, the Mooretown Flags, and the Petrolia Flyers taking over on Friday night. It's great hockey, it's free and it's open to the community. It's a great chance to come out ahead of the season, which is starting very soon."

Doors open at 5 p.m. Friday night. The Legionnaires take to the ice at 6 p.m., the Sting play at 8 p.m., and then the Flags and Flyers square off at 9 p.m.

Holder said tickets are free, but residents are asked to pick them up from one of a number of local businesses so they know how many people to expect.

She said they're asking teams to raise a minimum of $1,000 to participate and perform one good deed in the community.

The tournament will kick-start fundraising, with teams having until December 31, 2023, to reach their $1,000 goal and complete their good deed.

Charities benefitting from the event include;

- Huron House Boys Home

- The Inn of the Good Shepherd

- United Way of Sarnia-Lambton
