Sarnia-Lambton poised to break temperature record

We're on track to set a new record high temperature in Sarnia-Lambton on Thursday.

The mercury is forecast to reach 11 C, breaking the all-time high for February 8 which is 9.2 C, set in 1990.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said it's been mild recently.

"There has been a big flow of air coming from the southwest over the past number of days and a fair amount of sunshine in many areas," said Coulson. "In southwestern Ontario we've certainly seen above normal temperatures and it looks like Thursday and Friday will be the warmest in this particular stretch."

We'll likely set another record on Friday. The mark for February 9 is 13.2 C, set in 2023, and it's expected to reach 16 C. Coulson said it'll still be relatively mild on Saturday and Sunday, with highs of 9 C and 3 C respectively.

"The long-range forecast for after Valentine's Day, after about mid-month, sees a return to more seasonal temperatures generally across southwestern Ontario. What that could mean for Sarnia is daytime highs of around -1 C and overnight lows near -9 C," he said.

Coulson notes that it varies when it comes to setting new record highs.

"Some of the records were broken in fairly recent times but in other sites we have to go back to the 1900s or 1925 in some other locations where we've seen records actually somewhat warmer than this. In some respects, the records are fairly recent, and yet in other sites across southwestern Ontario we have to go back over 80 years to find similar temperatures," Coulson said.

In terms of precipitation, there's a 40 per cent chance of showers both Friday and Saturday before cloudy skies are projected during the following few days.
