UPDATE: Suncor activates response after heavy rain

High water levels prompted an alert this morning at Sarnia's Suncor Refinery.

The company said an incident response was activated at about 8 a.m. due to a large volume of water at the docks with the potential for offsite impact at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

"We are making notifications to key community resources to ensure this response has the appropriate support as our first priority is always for the safety of everyone working at our site and for the surrounding community," said the company through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts. "As a result, community members may notice odours in the area."

In an update late Tuesday morning, the company said no sheens have been observed on the river and monitoring continues, however odours are present.

"As a precaution, the refinery’s Spill Response Team deployed booms into the St. Clair River," read the alert. "The refinery is conducting air monitoring and continues to manage water. Appropriate recovery and clean-up operations will be determined."

Suncor said the overflow of stormwater to the South Vidal Street ditch is being assessed, but there was no impact to the St. Clair River.

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks as well as the Spills Action Centre have been notified.

The all-clear was issued just after 2:30 p.m.
