UPDATE: Man facing weapon charges in home intruder call

A 36-year-old Sarnia man was arrested Sunday when police responded to a home intruder call in the Sherwood Village area.

Sarnia police responded to a home on Trudeau Drive at around 12:40 p.m. for an unwanted person who was allegedly armed with a knife.

During the investigation police learned the accused was not known to the victim but they agreed to meet through an internet app.

Police said the man was displaying erratic behaviour, appeared to be under the influence of illegal substances and was asked to leave. It's alleged he then produced a sawed off shotgun.

When the victim called police the suspect attempted to leave but was quickly located by responding officers, arrested and held for bail.

Investigators said following the arrest officers found a duffle bag belonging to the accused containing two sawed off shotguns and ammunition.

The accused was under a lifetime court imposed firearms prohibition.

The 36-year-old is facing 15 charges in connection to the incident:

  • Assault with a weapon

  • Using a firearm contrary to probation order x2

  • Possession of a prohibited firearm x2

  • Using a firearm in the commission of an offence

  • Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition x2

  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession unauthorized x2

  • Careless storage of a firearm x2

  • Careless storage of ammunition

  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose

“The presence of these weapons illustrates the unknown dangers officers often face, further reinforcing that there is no such thing as a “routine” call.  We recognize the importance of ensuring our officers have the necessary training, equipment, and resources to safely respond to these rapidly changing circumstances.  This incident could easily have had a tragic outcome.  Our responding officers did an exceptional job in quickly and safely arresting this individual," said Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis.
