Sarnia-Lambton residents will take over the runway at Chris Hadfield Airport for a fundraiser held in support of the YMCA.
Jordan's Run the Runway five-kilometre walk, run, or roll will be held on Friday, October 4. The event will also include a 1k kiddie trot for children.
"People can join us out there, literally on the runway! They can run, they can walk, it's fully accessible because it's a runway," said YMCA of Southwestern Ontario Vice President of Development Christina Harley. "We'll keep the planes away as we take over that runway."
The fundraiser initially launched in London over a decade ago in memory of Jordan Strickland and expanded to Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton this year.
However, Harley said funds raised will stay in their respective communities to support the Y's financial assistance program.
"Jordan was a camper at our YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth, he spent many years up on that island. He had mobility challenges as well as communication challenges," Harley said. "His family truly believed in accessibility for all. When Jordan tragically passed away, we set up this run in order to make sure that children who were unable to afford the cost of camps and now YMCA programs in their community, we could raise funds to help ensure everybody has access to the programs and services, regardless of their ability to pay."
Harley said those interested in participating can register online up until October 3.
The event will be held rain or shine.
Check-in will begin at 5 p.m., and the 5k run will start at 6 p.m. Refreshments will follow in the hangar and a silent auction will close at 7 p.m.
