Additional EV chargers on the horizon for Point Edward

The Ontario government has announced plans to build three electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Village of Point Edward as part of a provincial program, but the process could take one to two years.

The new Level 3 fast-chargers are expected to be installed at Four Points by Sheraton Point Edward Sarnia.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey shared the news last week as part of the Ford government's $63 million investment through the EV ChargeON program (community sites stream).

“For EV drivers finding a charging station that’s close by and available can mean the difference between a quick stop and a time-consuming detour that takes time away from work, school or family,” Bailey said in a released statement. “I’m proud to be delivering three new EV charging stations in Point Edward to make life easier and more convenient for drivers.”

As part of the funding announcement, over 1,300 chargers will be installed at 270 sites across the province.

"So, you’ll start to see many of these projects into the next year and we'll see many of them come online in the next two years," said Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce during a media conference. "So, the objective is to really create as much pressure on the system as possible to get these up and running for communities across Ontario."

There are three EV charging sites in Point Edward for public use.

The website, chargehub.com, said stations are located at Duty Free Sarnia, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton, and Lambton Public Health.

To be considered for the EV ChargeON program community sites stream, applicants -- such as businesses, non-profits, and municipalities -- had to ensure the chargers would be available 24/7. Eligible applicants also had to be located in communities with a population of 170,000 or less.

The provincial program also consists of a government site stream; requests for bids closed in September.
