Candlelight vigil to honour Montreal massacre victims

The 14 women murdered at École Polytechnique will be remembered during a candlelight vigil in Sarnia, as December 6 marks the 35th anniversary of what's referred to as the Montreal Massacre.

The Centre -- previously known as the Sexual Assault Survivors Centre -- will host the somber event on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, at its site at 145 Christina St. North.

Public Education Coordinator Trish Vanoosterom said many agencies in the community will come together from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"There will be [biographies] of each individual that was murdered that day, some other femicides that have happened in Ontario and some candle lighting in recognition of that," she said.

The vigil will also be held during the 16 Days of Activism, an international campaign that runs from November 25 to December 10.

"So when we look at the 16 Days of Activism, there are seven components of what we're trying to achieve," Vanoosterom said. "The first would be global awareness and education, international solidarity, advocacy for change, empowering survivors, prevention and intervention, commemoration and reflection, and promoting gender equality."

November also marked Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month.

The Centre has been working with the Women's Interval Home and Sarnia Police Service to shed light on the issue through a social media campaign.
