Petrolia MMA fighter earns UFC contract

Bantamweight fighter and Petrolia native Cody Chovancek is officially a member of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The 27-year-old knocked out England's Raphael Uchegbu on Dana White's Contender Series Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Officials stopped the match 10 seconds into the third round after Chovancek caught Uchegbu with a clean left hook.

Chovancek, who is the second Canadian to earn a UFC contract on the show this season, is ranked as the 204th best fighter in North America.

Chovancek has a perfect pro MMA record of 9-0-0, and is affiliated with Niagara Top Team in St. Catharines.

He defended his bantamweight title in May with a win over American Jordan Howard in May at Unified MMA 62 in Toronto.
