A youth is facing charges after an injury to a family dog.
Sarnia police said they were called to a residence to investigate an injury to a family's pet on February 19, after the family noticed that their family dog, a 5 year old labrador named Jagger, had an injury to his tail.
Closer inspection revealed an elastic hair tie tightly wrapped around his tail. As the tie closely matched the colour of his fur, it was not very noticeable and appeared to have been there for several days.
Jagger was immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic, where efforts were made to preserve his tail. However, after a few days of treatment, the tip of Jagger’s tail had deteriorated, ultimately detached, and left an open wound in which bone was visible.
Unfortunately, on February 25, his tail needed to be amputated in emergency surgery. The family’s medical costs for Jagger were over $2300.
An investigation found that a 15-year-old female, who was known to the family but not a family member, had deliberately wrapped a hair tie around Jagger’s tail multiple times, cutting off circulation.
The 15-year-old is facing charges of injuring an animal.
Jagger is currently recovering with his family
