Sarnia to honour fallen workers on National Day of Mourning

Ceremonies are being held across the country on Tuesday, including Sarnia, to honour those injured or killed on the job.

April 28 is recognized as the National Day of Mourning.

The first official National Day of Mourning in Canada was held in 1991, following the passing of the Workers Mourning Day Act.

A ceremony will be held at the Clifford Hansen Fire Station on East Street in Sarnia beginning at 6 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.

Last year it was hoped the ceremony, hosted by the Sarnia and District Labour Council and Victims of Chemical Valley, could once again be held at the Missing Worker Memorial at Centennial Park for 2026.

The statue, originally created by Artist Shawn McKnight, was removed for refurbishment last year and work is nearly complete.

The $150,000 initiative includes a new stone ground surface, alongside lighting, benches, new stone carvings, a drum circle area, storyboards and new plantings.
