Former Sarnia Sting forward Kris Newbury has signed a standard player agreement with his hometown Brampton Beast of the ECHL.
Newbury is a veteran of the NHL and has suited up for numerous teams over the course of his hockey career.
His career began in 2002, when he was a drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round, 139th overall.
The Brampton native made it into 75 games and spent time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers from 2005-2014. Over the course of his NHL career, he scored four goals, ten points and accumulated 139 penalty minutes.
Newbury also had a prolific American Hockey League career. He appeared in 826 games, scoring 199 goals and 383 assists for 582 total points.
He says he's excited to get started with his new team.
“I thought it would be fun to play with my hometown again. I still love the game and I want to be competitive. I like to play physical and stick up for my teammates. I’ll obviously try to chip in with some goals and assists. Every game you want to have the chance to win, so I think if we bring a high energy level and a good compete level we’ll be fine,” said Newbury.
He was named an All-Star in 2006-07 during his time with the Toronto Marlies. The gritty winger scored 36 points in 37 games to earn his first All-Star appearance.
Newbury has played for the St. John’s Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hartford Wolf Pack, Adirondack Phantoms, Hershey Bears, Ontario Reign, Bakersfield Condors and Charlotte Checkers. In addition, the Brampton native was an assistant captain for the Connecticut Whale from 2010-11 to 2012-13.
This past season Newbury made his first foray into Europe when he signed in the Germany with the Fischtown Penguins.
He played in 45 games and scored 36 points, while also contributing 124 penalty minutes. He also scored ten points in seven playoff games for the DEL squad.
Prior to starting his professional career, Newbury also spent six years in the Ontario Hockey League and was named an OHL Champion in 1998-99 with the Belleville Bulls.
He also donned the yellow jerseys of the Sarnia Sting for three and a half seasons.
