Local Food Funding For Saugeen Specialty Grains

A Grey County company one of 14 sharing in Local Food Fund money announced this week by provincial agriculture minister Jeff Leal.

Saugeen Specialty Grains is getting up to 200 thousand dollars to buy and install modern steam flaking equipment.

That will allow the company to process it's own grains as well as grains from other local farmers into ready-to-use, readily available products.

One of the biggest investments announced this week was for almost 950 thousand dollars to VG Meats Limited to help bring Ontario beef to more than 25 Longo's grocery stores.

About 1 point 2 million is going to Quality Cheese in the Toronto area towards the purchase of leading edge cheese making equipment.

The smallest of this week's 14 investments was for more than 17 thousand for Leading Post Wines in the Hamilton Region to expand it's winery capabilities, capacity and product offerings.

The Local Food Fund is part of the Ontario government's broader local food strategy aimed at increasing consumer awareness of and access to food and beverages produced, grown and harvested in the province.
