The Town of Essex is voting for its new deputy mayor Monday afternoon just in time for Essex County Council's swearing in on Wednesday night.
"It'd be better if we knew [who the deputy mayor would be] ahead of time," says Ron McDermott, mayor for the town.
An orientation meeting has already been held for the county and with Essex not having a deputy mayor currently, one of the potential candidates for the job took in the session.
Essex is the only municipality in Essex County that doesn't have its deputy mayor elected at large. McDermott says council hasn't had the appetite to change how it elects its deputy mayor.
"I've heard this in the past also, couple people wanted to do the same thing, but nothing ever came of it," says McDermott.
Re-elected councillor Richard Meloche most recently served as deputy mayor in Essex. The meeting is set for 5pm at Essex Town Hall.
