Leamington CUPE Members Accept Freeze

Leamington's firefighters have done it. Non-union staff with the town have done it. Now, workers in Leamington's water and pollution control departments are accepting a two-year pay freeze.

Mayor John Paterson says workers recognize the town lost a major source of revenue when the Heinz factory closed. Heinz contributed $500,000 in property taxes to the town's coffers. He hopes the pay freeze is short-lived, "to get us over the hump."

"Council itself and administration are making whatever moves we can to hopefully bring something new to this municipality and increase the revenue stream that we've lost," says Paterson.

The workers are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
