Six local organizations will share $112,752 in federal cash to raise awareness of elder abuse, allow seniors to mentor youth and reduce social isolation.
Essex MP Jeff Watson announced the funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program at the Good Neighbour Club in Belle River Wednesday morning. The club will receive $9,184 to install a disability entrance.
"Our government recognizes the valuable contribution seniors have made to our society and the economy," says Watson. "We are acting to ensure seniors maintain a good quality of life and continue to be active members of their communities."
Other groups that benefit include Life After Fifty, which will use the money to help those close to retirement to prepare for life after work, and Family Services Windsor-Essex. A grant of $19,400 will support its Financial Elder Abuse Prevention Program.
