LaSalle Residents Oppose 'Student Ghetto'

Some residents in one LaSalle neighbourhood fear the area will turn into a "student ghetto" if a new townhome development moves forward.

Developers have proposed an eight unit row house at 2005 Cousineau Rd. just west of Heritage Dr.

Cassandra Webber built her home behind the site 17 years ago. "St. Clair College is right across the street from us, we're going to have students living in our backyards. It's going to be a nightmare," says Webber. "And then my neighbours are going to start selling their homes to developers who want to rent to students and before you know it, you have a student ghetto."

LaSalle Council must first approve the developer's request to rezone the area to accommodate townhomes, which has been deferred to a future meeting. Mayor Ken Antaya says this type of residential development is "sorely lacking in our community."
