Power Outages Restored Quicker

Essex Power has developed new technology that will hopefully get your lights on faster during a power outage.

The system, believed to be the first of its kind, quickly tracks outages as they happen, instead of waiting for someone to report them.

Essex Power General Manager Joe Barile says they eventually plan to sell the Smart Map system to other utilities in the province. "It's taken, I would say, at least two to three years to develop the technology. It's a proactive-type technology," says Barile. "We are made aware of an outage before the customer calls us and our intention is to tell the customer about the outage before they tell us."

Barile says customers will notice a difference with this new technology. "Outage time reductions, so we get to the outage quicker," he says. "We find out what the cause of the outage is quicker so we fix quicker, eliminating all those inefficiencies."

The technology is currently being tested in LaSalle, Tecumseh, Leamington and Amherstburg.
