Suzuki Inspiring Next Generation

The Essex Region Conservation Authority's General Manager is encouraged by the enthusiasm he sees, in area youth, for the environment.

Dr. David Suzuki visited Windsor this past week to share stories with elementary school kids in the region, and Richard Wyma says the next generation gets a lot of flack for sitting in front of computers, but many of them are actually starting environmental initiatives in their homes. "Whether it be through things like the blue box program, years ago, to efforts today to get out(side). Our school groups that come out and do the outdoor education programs are bringing those messages back to their parents," explains Wyma. "Their parents are then taking them out to parks and conservation areas on the weekends."

Wyma says local animal habitats and waterways are in the best shape they've been in decades thanks to the planting of 6-million trees, restoration of thousands of acres of natural land, and investing in shoreline projects.

ERCA's GM explains that we are surrounded by Carolinian forest, where there are more endangered and globally significant species than anywhere else in Canada, so it's up to the next generation to continue to keep it healthy.
