Kingsville Cracks Down On Portable Signs

Saying they clutter up downtown Kingsville and present a traffic hazard to drivers, town councillors have finally adopted a bylaw limiting how long portable signs can stay up.

Business owners and service clubs will have to get a permit that will be good for just 30 days. They'll only be allowed to renew that permit once a year.

"There's been a sense of frustration both from the public and council members in terms of the number of signs," says Mayor Nelson Santos. "(They) just continue to increase. Those portable signs are appearing on every street corner (and) along many properties."

The issue has been kicking around council for several years now, but Santos says councillors were able to bring in the bylaw because the Business Improvement Association had a change of heart.

"It was taking away from the beautification projects that even the BIA was providing."
