Students Step Up For Sick Classmate

Grade 9s at Holy Names High School in Windsor are taking their school motto, "For Others Not One's Self" to heart by raising money to help a sick classmate.

At least $2,000 was raised Thursday morning to help the family of Arnie Ferman, who has D-Cell Lymphoma. Ferman, diagnosed over the summer, is receiving treatment at a hospital in London.

Principal Brendan Roberts says most of the students don't even know Ferman, but they stepped up anyway.

"We're here to teach our students to be good people in our society," says Roberts. "This was an overwhelmingly positive, proper response. I'm very proud of them, extremely proud of them."

Roberts had hoped 100 students would take part in the fundraiser, raising $1,000 for the Ferman family. As of Wednesday, they'd raised $1,800. He says the final tally could reach $3,000.
