Amherstburg Fire Under Provincial Review

The Amherstburg Fire department will undergo an extensive review by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.

The department's new fire chief Al Reaume asked for it himself because one hasn't been done since 2007.

"They'll present a report to council on all aspects of the department -- where we're at with our training, is there anything that needs to be changed," he says. "Our fire responses. What time of fire protection should we be looking for on Boblo Island, for example."

Part of the reason Reaume says he called for the review stems from the previous chief being fired in June.

"I had very little information on this department -- how it ran, the structure or even the reasons that created the problem," he says. "The easiest thing for me to do to try and get a handle on everything was to bring an outside agency that could look at our operation and make recommendations."

Reaume says OFM will spend about a week in the town and the review is free of charge, which will save the town more than $50,000 if an outside company were to conduct the same review.

"If we have problems or deficiencies, I want them identified so we can fix them," Reaume says.

The chief hopes to have the review complete by the end of this year.
