The new Windsor Youth Centre is opening today in the 1200-block of Wyandotte St. E., and just in time, as colder temperatures are hitting the city.
Earlier this year, the WYC's 'Almost Home' campaign raised more than $635,000 in order to be able to move to a larger space. About $149,000 of that came from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
"Windsor can be proud of its unique brand of hands-on philanthropy," says WYC Executive Director Tamara Kowalska. "Our major sponsors visited the site and kept in touch throughout the renovation. With no core funding, it's the community's involvement, along with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, that keeps our doors open."
The new centre is expected to accommodate 50 youth, on average, who attend daily drop-programs.
The Windsor Youth Centre's been in operation since 2011.
