Developer Eyes Church On Chopping Block

An out-of-town buyer may be interested in saving a historic Windsor church from possible demolition.

The city's heritage committee voted to refer the demolition request for St. George's Church to city council.

Councillor Chris Holt won't say much just yet about the interested party he met just a few weeks ago.

"He's redeveloped churches before," Holt says. "I don't want to put too much out there because I don't want to get people's hopes up too much and put too much pressure on this guy. I know he's very motivated."

The Anglican Diocese of Huron building dates back to 1921, with an addition in 1951. Despite the dire need for repair, Holt doesn't want to see it demolished.

"Everything is worth saving. It's just a matter of how much," he says. "I hope it's not too daunting of a project for him because it sounds like there's a lot of work that's necessary."

Administration is recommending the demolition permit be granted for 1949 Devonshire Crt. City council has 60 days to decide or the demolition request will automatically be granted. A decision is expected before December 15.

The diocese wants to demolish the structure and provide a clean slate for redevelopment.
