Windsor City Councillors voted 6-5 against going through an RFP process to explore the possibility of outsourcing caretakers in city facilities.
The rationale for many was the need to provide quality and sometimes specialized service and the desire to maintain good paying jobs in the community.
President of CUPE Local 82 Rob Kolody says he is surprised by the outcome. "A lot of the members just kind of thought that it was a done deal and the contracting out was done and that's why morale was so low for so long."
The decision will put pressure on future budgets as CAO Helga Reidel says there are not many areas left to cut in the city`s operating budget. "After seven years it has become much more difficult, so unless something dramatic happens between now and budget time it certainly will be challenging for all concerned."
