A dangerous weapon is off Windsor streets after police performed a street check early Thursday morning.
Windsor police approached two young males in a residential area of Walker Rd. and Richmond St. around 1:15am. After talking to the men for a couple minutes, police noticed a concealed weapon and seized a .32 caliber revolver, ammunition and cocaine from one of the men.
Chief Al Frederick says new legislation surrounding street checks currently up for review in Ontario threatens arrests like this one. Under the proposed legislation police approaching the suspicious males would have had to state, "You don't have to talk to us if you don't want to and you can leave at any time."
"I ask our community, do you honestly think the result in this situation would have been the same? This street check resulted in the removal of a hand gun and drugs from our community because of the proactive and proper work of our officers under the current scope of legislation," says Frederick.
Muhammed Omar, 21, of London Ontario is charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited, possession of ammunition while prohibited, and careless storage of a firearm.
