A father and daughter from Windsor are being credited for their fast thinking after helping to save a man who was floating helplessly in the Detroit River.
Sean Turner and his 14-year-old daughter Emma were walking along Windsor's riverfront Thursday night around 7pm, when they heard someone calling for help. After rushing over to the ledge, Emma says she could see the man struggling in the water.
"I noticed that there was a life preserver 30 ft down the railing, so I told my dad to go grab it and I made the call to the police," she says. "My mind was really clear with what I needed to do -- one step after the other."
Sean threw a life ring to the man in the water while his daughter was on the phone, but wasn't able to get him out of the river by himself.
"He tried to pull him out, but it wasn't a good angle... it was too high," says Emma.
Windsor police, EMS and Windsor firefighters arrived quickly at the scene to help the 29-year-old man out of the water near Coventry Gardens. Police say he was then taken to hospital to be evaluated.
"I was really relieved," says Emma. "It was all really fast."
Sean says he may have helped, but it was Emma's quick thinking that ultimately rescued the man from the cold water.
"We did what we were supposed to do," he says. "[But Emma] was the one who reacted, she was the one who said 'get the life preserver', she was the one who called the police."
